TOBAGO’S
GRANDE DAME
The Crown Point Beach Hotel Major-General
Richard Rohmer, a highly decorated W W II fighter pilot, and now a best
selling author, is a regular guest and describes the Hotel as his favourite
place in all the world.
He’s not alone in expressing these sentiments. The list of eminent
persons who’ve stayed here is as long as the proverbial arm, and
reads like a who’s-who of the past millennium. The Crown Point
Beach Hotel was built around 1961/2 just in time for Tobago’s
worst ever hurricane Flora to come along in 1963 and demolish its top
floor!
Queen
Elizabeth II heads the British royalty list. Her honeymooning sister
Princess Margaret, dazzled all before her and wittily observed that
the shallow waters of the reef were as clear as the new invention nylon
- thus NYLON POOL. The world’s richest man at the time, John Paul
Getty, together with a host of West Indian Prime Ministers, Governors
and Governor-Generals all took their rest here. The great entertainers,
the Beatles, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jnr. and the legendary Mighty
Sparrow together with film stars Robert Mitchum, Margaret Rutherford,
John Mills and Walt Disney all slumbered here on their comfortable pillows.
The giants of West Indian literature V. S. Naipaul and Derek Walcott
must have had a few creative thoughts while gazing out to sea, I’d
like to think.
Yet, in spite of its celebrity connections, the Grande Dame welcomes
all those who walk through her doors and treats everyone like royalty.
The genial Manager, Neil Vilain must be doing something right as he’s
been looking after the great lady for the past 20 years. For many years,
the grounds and the facilities have been home to the friendliest regatta,
the Angostura Sail Week in May, which is a major event on Tobago’s
Calendar. So too are the popular Carib events – the Fishing Tournament
and the Great Power Boat Race both head-quartered at the hotel.
Crown
Point’s Grande Dame sits majestically on 7 acres atop Store Bay’s
white sand beach and is an ideal base from which to explore this friendly
island as most activities can be organized from the Hotel.
It’s ideal for families and children play freely in the grounds.
Recreational facilities include tennis courts, swimming pool, and shuffleboard,
while swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving in the crystal clear waters
of Store Bay are on the doorstep. You can even kickback and try your
hand at fishing right from the grounds.
The Grande Dame has kept abreast of the times and the lively, modern
Royalton Casino has been added for the enjoyment of her guests.
The newly acclaimed ‘Chart House Restaurant’ offers casual
to fine dining, an award winning wine list and breath taking sunset
views of Store Bay. The menu is an infusion of cultures and reflects
Caribbean, Latin American and South Pacific seafood and meat dishes
that Food & Beverage Director, Robert Agostini has lived and learned
and presents innovatively with help from his expert culinary team headed
by Executive Chef Josh Stephens.
The ‘Sundowners Bar’ celebrates the breath-taking sunsets
daily from 5-7 p.m with happy-hour pricing for many of their sunset
specialized drinks; enjoy appetizers and light fare or choose items
from the Chart House menu.
Visit the Casino, The Chart House Restaurant or the Sundowners Bar and
experience and enjoy the famous Island-style Tobago hospitality.
The Grande Dame pays you the attention you deserve!
